153rd IPU Assembly in Tanzania: Indian Parliamentary Delegation Addresses Climate Disasters and Good Governance
Led by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh, the Indian delegation participated in various critical discussions and committees during the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) in Arusha, Tanzania.

The Indian parliamentary delegation continued its active participation in the 153rd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) held in Arusha, Tanzania. Under the leadership of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh, Indian members took part in various sessions on the fourth day of the assembly, dated October 8, 2026.
The delegation participated in discussions on an emergency topic proposed by Nepal titled "Urgent Parliamentary Action to Address Climate-Related Disasters and Strengthen Resilience in the Himalayan Region and Other Vulnerable Areas." Additionally, the Indian delegation joined the ongoing general debate on the theme "Promoting Good Governance and Empowering Communities through Inclusivity, Trust, and Opportunities for All."
Lok Sabha MP Dr. Anurag Singh Thakur presented India's position on the emergency topic concerning climate-related disasters. He also attended the Bureau meeting of the Standing Committee on Democracy and Human Rights, where he clarified the perspective of the Indian Parliament regarding proposed topics for future assemblies.
Rajya Sabha MP Dr. Sasmit Patra participated in a panel discussion on "The United Nations' Mechanism for Conflict Prevention and Resolution: How Does It Work?" during a meeting of the Standing Committee on United Nations Affairs. Furthermore, he attended the hearings for candidates prior to the election for the presidency held on October 9, 2026.
Lok Sabha MP Dr. Lata Wankhede took part in a panel discussion on "Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Work" at a meeting of the Standing Committee on Sustainable Development. Meanwhile, the Secretary-General of the Rajya Sabha attended the meeting of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments (ASGP), where information regarding the budget processes of the Indian Parliament was shared with other participants.
On the final day of the assembly, October 9, 2026, Mr. Milton Dick, Speaker of the Australian House of Representatives, was elected President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh and members of the Indian delegation personally congratulated Mr. Milton Dick and expressed their best wishes for a successful tenure.
