Deadline Extended for Income Tax Returns and Audit Reports, CBDT Issues New Schedule
The CBDT has extended the deadline for taxpayers subject to audit to file their income tax returns and audit reports for the assessment year 2026-27.
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has implemented significant changes regarding the assessment year 2026-27 for taxpayers who fall under the scope of an audit as per the Income Tax Act, 1961. The Board has extended the final date for filing income tax returns from October 31, 2026, to November 21, 2026.
As a result of this decision, the scheduled date for submitting audit reports has also been revised. The deadline for presenting audit reports for the assessment year 2026-27 has been extended from September 30, 2026, to October 21, 2026.
This extension will apply to those individuals and entities mentioned in serial number 2 of the table provided under Explanation 2 to subsection (1) of Section 139 of the Income Tax Act, 1961. The Ministry of Finance has clarified that a formal order and notification in this regard will be issued separately.
