Jhansi Gang Rape Case: NHRC Takes Suo Motu Cognizance, Issues Notices to DM and SSP
The National Human Rights Commission has demanded a detailed report following the alleged suicide of a woman after a gang rape incident in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of India has taken suo motu cognizance of a case involving the alleged suicide of a 19-year-old woman in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. According to a media report, the woman committed suicide after being gang-raped by six individuals, three of whom are reported to be minors.
According to the report, the victim had visited a cattle shed for some work, where the six accused intercepted her and committed the gang rape. A media report published on September 23, 2026, further stated that the victim was being threatened with the circulation of videos, which led her to consume poison out of distress.
The National Human Rights Commission observed that if the contents of the media report are true, it constitutes a serious violation of human rights. In this regard, the Commission has issued notices to the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) and the District Magistrate (DM) of Jhansi, seeking a detailed report within two weeks. Through this report, the Commission expects to receive information regarding the current status of the investigation into the case and details of any compensation provided to the family members of the deceased.
