Maharashtra: Doubling of Chowk-Karjat Railway Section Approved at a Cost of 497 Crore Rupees

Indian Railways has approved the doubling of the Chowk-Karjat railway section of Central Railway in Maharashtra, aiming to improve rail operations and expand capacity. The project will be implemented at a total cost of 497 crore rupees, covering the doubling of a 10.86-kilometer long section.

This project has been sanctioned as part of the broader scope of doubling, tripling, quadrupling, flyover, and bypass works initiated to enhance the capacity of the railway network. The Chowk-Karjat section is a critical part of the Panvel-Chowk-Karjat route, serving as a major corridor for both passenger and freight transport. Currently operating as a single-line section, its conversion to a double line will improve train movement and provide additional capacity.

Once the project is completed, it is expected that five additional passenger trains will operate daily in both directions on this section. Furthermore, in terms of freight transport, the project is anticipated to enable an additional traffic volume of 18.35 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), which will also reduce delays for goods trains.

According to the railway administration, the doubling of the Chowk-Karjat section is part of Indian Railways' ongoing commitment to strengthening infrastructure and enhancing passenger and freight services.
