Mumbai's Jawahar Dweep Becomes Country's First Plastic-Free Oil Terminal
The Mumbai Port Authority has declared the Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal plastic-free, marking a significant step toward sustainable port operations.

The Mumbai Port Authority has officially declared its Jawahar Dweep Marine Oil Terminal as plastic-free. This achievement is regarded as a critical step toward making India's port operations more sustainable. The announcement was made during the 'Swachhata Abhiyan 2026' event held at the Grey Gate of Indira Dock in Mumbai to commemorate the birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi.
The program was led by Sarbananda Sonowal, the Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairman of the Mumbai Port Authority, Vice Chairman Ravish Kumar Singh, and other senior officials were also present on the occasion. Making Jawahar Dweep plastic-free is part of broader efforts by the Mumbai Port to eliminate single-use plastics from its operations. The authority has committed to continuing campaigns to reduce plastic throughout the year across its docks, residential colonies, and coastal areas.
Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision for the Swachh Bharat Mission, stating that a plastic-free Jawahar Dweep proves that India's ports can maintain cleanliness alongside development. He remarked that Swachh Bharat is no longer just a program but has become a way of working, with sanitation workers bringing this vision to life on the ground.
During the event, sanitation workers were honored for their contributions, and their experiences were discussed. Prior to this, a short film based on the port's 'Swachh Bharat' initiative was screened. On the same occasion, Minister Sonowal dedicated the port's 'Oil Spill Response' (OSR) facilities to the nation.
Following the formal proceedings, cleaning activities were conducted under Sonowal's leadership across various port areas, including the southern region of 18ID, OSR facilities, sea cleaning, the ghat of the BPX North Area, and toilet facilities for mooring staff. Dr. M. Angamuthu, Chairman of the Mumbai Port Authority, stated that the campaign provided an opportunity to recognize the contributions of sanitation workers and reaffirm the commitment to operating in a sustainable and responsible manner.
