NCSC Chairperson Investigates Death of SC Student at IIT Bombay, Orders Preservation of Evidence

The Chairperson of the National Commission for Scheduled Castes (NCSC), Mr. Kishore Makwana, visited the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to conduct a detailed investigation into the death of Mr. Sahil Wakode, a second-year B.Tech student from the Scheduled Caste community in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering. The visit follows allegations made by the deceased's family regarding caste-based discrimination, harassment, and the circumstances leading up to the death. The Mumbai Police Crime Branch is currently investigating the case.

During the investigation, the Chairperson held detailed discussions with the Director, Deputy Director, Registrar, and relevant faculty members of IIT Bombay. The Commission sought details of the events preceding the student's death, including an investigation into an alleged academic misconduct incident during a midterm exam on September 18, 2026, and the subsequent inquiry process. Mr. Makwana emphasized that all relevant materials, including CCTV footage, electronic evidence, official communications, and examination records, must be preserved and made available to the investigating officers.

The Chairperson inspected the classroom of the Energy Science and Engineering Department, the examination hall, and the student's hostel room. He also interacted with the deceased's classmates to gather information about their campus experiences and the events leading up to the death.

Following the investigation at IIT Bombay, Mr. Kishore Makwana held a high-level meeting with the Director General of Police, the Police Commissioner, and senior officials of the Crime Branch. He reviewed the FIR, the preservation of evidence, and the examination of witnesses. The Chairperson instructed officials to ensure that the investigation is fair, neutral, and swift, and that all documentary, forensic, and oral evidence is properly collected. The Commission has asked the concerned authorities to submit a detailed investigation report as soon as possible.

Subsequently, Mr. Makwana met with the parents and family of Sahil Wakode and heard their written complaint. He assured the family that the Commission would closely monitor the case in accordance with its constitutional and statutory obligations and take appropriate action based on the facts. The Commission emphasized the necessity of maintaining dignity, equality, non-discrimination, and an effective grievance redressal mechanism within institutions.

Dr. Sunil Kumar Babu (Director, NCSC Maharashtra), Dr. R. Stalin (Deputy Director, APCR Wing, NCSC Headquarters), and other officials from the state office were present during the visit.
