PM Modi Speaks With Captain Smit Machhar, Praises Courage in Saving Passengers' Lives
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a video call with Captain Smit Machhar, praising his bravery for prioritizing passenger safety despite being critically injured.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi interacted with Captain Smit Machhar via a video call. Beginning the conversation, the Prime Minister inquired about the Captain's health and assured him that the entire nation is praying for his speedy recovery. The Prime Minister lauded the pilot's courage, patience, and his wisdom in making quick decisions during a crisis to save many lives.
Prime Minister Modi stated that despite being seriously injured and fighting for survival, the Captain placed the safety of the passengers above his own life, which has brought pride to 140 crore Indians. Shri Modi emphasized, "Today, the entire country can say with pride that we Indians are not people who take lives, but people who save lives."
Captain Smit described the Prime Minister as his role model and, drawing from his 17 years of flying experience, explained how he sensed the aircraft descending. He described the difficult moments when, despite being badly trapped and injured, he attempted to open the door to save the passengers. The Prime Minister praised that the recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa provided him with spiritual strength during this arduous struggle.
The Prime Minister commended the patience of the Captain's family—Bhupendra Bhai, Gita Ben, and Sonal Ben. He specifically praised Gita Ben for the cultural values she instilled in her son and for implementing the teachings of the Bhagavad Gita in life. Additionally, the Prime Minister expressed joy upon learning that the Captain recites the Hanuman Chalisa daily with his two-year-old son.
On the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, the Prime Minister remarked that the Captain has lived the true meaning of non-violence. He also inquired about the well-being of the Captain's children, Bobby and Jiva, communicating with them in the Gujarati language. Shri Modi expressed gratitude to the governments of Saudi Arabia and the UAE for providing excellent medical care. He stated that the Captain's actions have enhanced the dignity and prestige of Indian pilots on a global scale.
Referring to the special prayers and aarti being performed for the Captain from Savarkundla to Vadhvan, the Prime Minister wished him a speedy recovery. He promised to meet him soon and gather full details of the incident.
