Election Commission of India Clarifies All Decisions, Including Voter List Revisions, Were Taken Unanimously
The Election Commission of India has stated that all initiatives and decisions made over the past year, including Special Summary Revisions of the electoral rolls, are the result of unanimous consensus.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has clarified its functioning and decision-making process, stating that it is a constitutional body operating under a strict mandate provided by Article 324 of the Constitution, statutory rules, and established institutional traditions. The Commission emphasized that all its actions are in accordance with the prescribed laws and directives.
According to the Commission, all official orders and administrative instructions issued following the statutory procedures established under the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023, carry full legal validity. The ECI clarified that questions or suggestions raised by members during the drafting stage are part of a standard administrative process aimed at improving electoral procedures and protecting voters' rights.
The Election Commission noted that differences of opinion during deliberations in any institution are common and constitute an integral part of the final decision-making process. All three commissioners of the Commission and every officer are authorized to suggest improvements to the electoral system.
The Commission informed that approximately 40 new initiatives have been launched in the past few months, and several electoral reforms, including the Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls, have been implemented across the country. All these decisions over the last year are the result of unanimous agreements within the Commission.
Additionally, the Commission highlighted the successful conduct of major elections in Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Assam, and West Bengal. Regarding digital security, the Commission stated that platforms such as ECI NET operate under strict data protection protocols and cybersecurity measures. Furthermore, Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and District Election Officers (DEOs) carry out the tasks of registration and deletion in accordance with their statutory powers under the law.
Reiterating its commitment, the Election Commission of India stated that it is dedicated to discharging its constitutional duties with full integrity and advancing the democratic process.
