Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Upendra Dwivedi welcomed the members of the joint India-Argentina Army mountaineering expedition in New Delhi. The expedition team successfully completed the climb of Mount Abi Gamin (7,355 meters) on September 17 and Mount Kamet (7,756 meters) on September 21, 2026. Notably, Mount Kamet, located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand, is the third highest peak in India after Mount Kanchenjunga and Mount Nanda Devi.
Led by Lieutenant Colonel Chirag Chatterjee, the 35-member expedition team comprised 25 personnel from the Indian Army and 10 from the Argentine Army. The team was flagged off from the Manekshaw Centre in New Delhi on August 21, 2026. The mountaineers conquered both peaks while braving the harsh conditions of the Himalayas, including extreme cold, strong winds, snowy terrain, steep cliffs, and deep crevasses.
This marked the third joint mountaineering expedition between the armies of the two nations. Previously, two successful expeditions were organized: one on Mount Aconcagua (6,962 meters) in Mendoza, Argentina, in January 2025, and another on Mount Kun (7,077 meters) in the Suru Valley of Ladakh in August 2025. These continuous expeditions have strengthened professional cooperation, interoperability, camaraderie, and trust between the Indian and Argentine armies, while providing experience in working together in high-altitude environments.
