National Fellowship Transforms Balamurugan's Life; Overcomes Financial Hardships to Become Scientist with 28 International Research Papers
With the support of the National Fellowship from the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Balamurugan S., belonging to the Scheduled Caste category, completed his doctorate and achieved significant milestones in scientific research.

Financial assistance for higher education and research is proving to be a milestone for students from marginalized communities. Through the National Fellowship of the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, 35-year-old Mr. Balamurugan S. has overcome financial barriers to establish himself in the scientific field. Belonging to the Devendra Kula Vellalar community and a beneficiary of the Scheduled Caste category, Balamurugan currently serves as a guest lecturer in Physics. He is the first graduate in several generations of his family and the only person to have earned a doctoral degree.
Financial difficulties were a major challenge on the path to scientific research, which were resolved with the support of the National Fellowship. During the fellowship period from 2017 to 2020, he was provided financial assistance of 25,000 rupees per month for the first two years and 31,000 rupees per month for the following two years. This support allowed him to dedicate himself fully to his research.
With the help of this fellowship, Balamurugan conducted specialized research on chemicals as well as advanced techniques such as X-ray Diffraction (XRD), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS), antimicrobial studies, and magnetic studies. He published a research paper on "Cadmium Oxide Nanopowders," which he describes as the world's first research paper on this specific subject. Through his continuous research efforts, he has published a total of 28 international research papers to date.
Reflecting on his journey, Mr. Balamurugan stated, "Receiving the National Fellowship provided me with the necessary support to dedicate myself entirely to scientific research. This helped me complete my research and publish 28 international research papers." Balamurugan's success demonstrates that timely financial stability can enable talented students from underprivileged communities to become self-reliant and contribute to scientific progress.
