Next-Generation Missile Vessels to Boost Indian Navy's Capabilities; Steel Cutting for Second Ship Completed at Cochin Shipyard

The steel cutting ceremony for the second ship of the Next-Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) project for the Indian Navy was held at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL) in Kochi on September 17, 2026. Rear Admiral Kapil Mehta, Assistant Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition, attended the event as the chief guest. Several senior officers from the Indian Navy and CSL were also present on the occasion.

The contract for the construction of the NGMV missile vessels was signed with Cochin Shipyard Limited in March 2023. These vessels are planned to be equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and sensors, which will enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy and help it evolve as a 'future-ready and combat-capable force.'

The construction of these ships reflects India's commitment to building a robust and modern navy capable of operating in the complex maritime environment of the Indian Ocean Region. Notably, all the major role-defining equipment for these vessels has been indigenously developed and manufactured. This initiative aligns with the Government of India's 'Atmanirbhar Bharat,' 'Make in India,' and 'Make for the World' campaigns.
