NLC India Aims to Drive National Development Through Energy Security and Sustainability by 2047
Navratna enterprise NLC India Limited is supporting India's Panchamrit climate goals by increasing its mining capacity and expanding its renewable energy portfolio.

NLC India Limited (NLCIL), a Navratna enterprise under the Ministry of Coal, is evolving into an integrated energy powerhouse to support India's goal of becoming a developed economy by 2047. Currently, the company has a power generation capacity of 8,405 MW and a mining capacity of 59.10 MTPA. The company is focusing on creating a balance between base-load energy requirements and carbon reduction.
To ensure energy security, NLCIL is expanding its mining capabilities. The company aims to increase its total mining capacity from 59.1 MTPA to 104.35 MTPA by 2030, and further to 115.85 MTPA by 2047, in order to reduce dependence on imports. Simultaneously, the company is transitioning toward cleaner thermal power, which includes supercritical units at Ghatampur (1,980 MW) and ultra-supercritical pit-head projects at Talabira (2,400 MW) and Machhakatta (4,000 MW). To improve logistical capacity, 'First Mile Connectivity' (FMC) rail corridors with a capacity of 63.5 MTPA are being launched at Pachwara South, Northern Dhadu, Talabira, Machhakatta, and New Patrapara.
In the renewable energy sector, NLCIL is operating through its dedicated arm, NLCIL Renewables Limited (NIRL). The company aims to expand its operational portfolio from the current ~1.8 GW to 10 GW by 2030 and 32.7 GW by 2047. Additionally, Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) projects are being developed in Tamil Nadu (250 MW/500 MWh), Rajasthan (300 MW/1,800 MWh), Gujarat (275 MW/550 MWh), and in collaboration with WSEDL (50 MW/200 MWh). To balance grid instability, focus is also being placed on Pumped Storage Projects (PSP) in Tamil Nadu and Odisha.
As part of its diversification efforts, NLCIL is constructing a pilot 4 MW solar-powered PEM electrolyzer Green Hydrogen plant in Neyveli and has partnered with IIT Madras for a carbon capture system. To achieve self-reliance in strategic minerals, the company has obtained domestic joint exploration licenses for phosphorite and limestone in Chhattisgarh, as well as vanadium and titanium in Telangana. Furthermore, potential for critical minerals is being explored internationally through KABIL.
