Bhopal: Central Zoo Authority and IIFM Launch Training Program for Zoo Keepers
The Central Zoo Authority and the Indian Institute of Forest Management have organized a three-day regional training program for zoo care personnel in Bhopal.

The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) and the Indian Institute of Forest Management (IIFM) have launched a three-day regional training program for zoo keepers at the IIFM campus in Bhopal. The program is being conducted from October 7 to October 9, 2026.
The primary objective of this training program is to implement uniform welfare standards for animal care in zoos across Central India and to improve mutual coordination between zoo management and keepers. The initiative focuses on enhancing the professional capabilities of zoo personnel, covering critical topics such as animal care, understanding animal behavior, facility operations, and conservation education. As part of this initiative, training is being provided through both technical classroom sessions and on-site field visits at the Van Vihar National Park in Bhopal.
Addressing the program, Dr. K. Ravichandran, Director of IIFM, stated that zoo keepers are the backbone of zoological garden operations as they are directly responsible for the daily care of the animals. He emphasized that the success of zoo management depends on the hard work and dedication of these personnel. He added that systematic technical training and knowledge of safety protocols would increase operational efficiency, reduce risks, and make the role of zoos in conservation education more effective.
Dr. V. Clement Ben, Member Secretary of the CZA, noted in his address that the daily monitoring by keepers is the first point of detection regarding the health and welfare of animals. He advised the personnel to make safety a daily habit and to work closely with veterinarians and managers. Dr. Ben clarified that the daily tasks performed by keepers have a direct impact on animal welfare, operational safety, and conservation outcomes.
