The Indian Naval Ship INS Trishul arrived in Toulon, France, on September 22, 2026, to participate in the 24th edition of the annual bilateral maritime exercise 'Varuna' with the French Navy. Upon its arrival, the French Navy welcomed INS Trishul with a formal water cannon salute.
During the harbor phase of the exercise, professional, sports, and cultural events were organized with the primary goal of deepening the maritime and professional bonds between the navies of the two countries. The Commanding Officer of INS Trishul held discussions with Rear Admiral Macara Ouk, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Operations (CECMED), and other senior leaders of the French Navy. Additionally, the Commanding Officer and crew paid tribute to 205 Indian soldiers who were martyred during the World Wars by laying a wreath at the Mazargues War Memorial in Marseille.
Professional activities included cross-deck visits and the exchange of operational experiences to enhance inter-operability. A cultural program hosted aboard INS Trishul was attended by several civilian dignitaries, including the Deputy Mayor of Toulon, Vice Admiral (Retd) Laurent Isnard, and officers of the French Navy. A volleyball match was also played to foster camaraderie among the personnel.
The crew of INS Trishul visited the French Navy ships Charles de Gaulle, Forbin, and La Fayette, gaining insights into aircraft carrier operations and ship procedures. During the maritime exercise, INS Trishul coordinated with French Navy units FDA Forbin, FLF La Fayette, and SNA Safran, as well as NH90 helicopters and Atlantic-2 maritime patrol aircraft.
The exercise involved critical drills such as anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, live firing, and cross-deck helicopter landings, which increased operational coordination and synergy between the two navies. The visit of INS Trishul reflects the commitment to a lasting maritime partnership and professional exchange between India and France.
