ICAR Organizes Waste Management and Sanitation Programs Under 'Swachhata Hi Seva' Campaign
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has conducted awareness programs across its institutes to promote cleaning and sustainable waste management following Ganesh Visarjan.
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) organized sanitation and awareness programs across its various institutes as part of the 'Swachhata Hi Seva' campaign. The primary objective of these programs was to keep public spaces clean, ensure environmental protection, and encourage community participation in the responsible management of waste following Ganesh Visarjan.
Under this initiative, awareness programs were held at local Ganesh pandals, where people were encouraged to use eco-friendly clay idols. Citizens were advised not to immerse idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) or those containing harmful chemical colors into drinking water tanks and natural water sources. Furthermore, emphasis was placed on using designated sites for immersion and ensuring the correct disposal of prayer materials, plastic, thermocol, and decorative waste.
During the programs, areas around local Ganesh pandals were cleaned, and the collected waste was segregated to ensure safe disposal. The importance of collective responsibility for the protection of water resources and public hygiene was highlighted during these activities.
As part of specific waste management efforts, ICAR-NISA in Ranchi, Jharkhand, and ICAR-CIRCOT in Mumbai, Maharashtra, collected and segregated flowers and other biodegradable prayer materials. This collected material was processed at composting centers and converted into organic manure, effectively transforming waste into a useful resource.
Through these activities, ICAR has aimed to increase awareness regarding environmental conservation, cleanliness, and sustainable waste management, while encouraging the adoption of safe and eco-friendly practices in the future.
