JP Nadda to Lay Foundation Stone for ICMR's Center for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research in Keylong, Himachal Pradesh
Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda will lay the foundation stone for ICMR's first high-altitude medicine and public health research center in Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti, on October 12, 2026.

Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare, Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, will lay the foundation stone for the 'ICMR Center for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research' (ICMR-CHAMP) in Keylong, Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, on October 12, 2026. The center is being established by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) under the Department of Health Research of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India.
The primary objective of this center is to strengthen multidisciplinary research, innovation, and capacity building in the high-altitude and climate-sensitive regions of India. Due to extreme altitude, challenging geographical conditions, and climate variability in the Himalayan regions, specific challenges arise regarding access to health services and disease patterns. The center will focus on gathering scientific evidence and developing effective health solutions for people living and working in these challenging environments.
The scope of research will encompass topics such as mountain medicine, body functions at high altitudes, climate-sensitive and emerging diseases, maternal and child health, nutrition, mental health, occupational health, and disaster medicine. Furthermore, modern tools such as telemedicine, digital health platforms, drone-powered health logistics, and real-time public health monitoring will be utilized to extend health services to remote areas.
This center will provide a critical platform for studying the effects of climate change and the health of tribal populations residing in strategically important border areas. The initiative will foster collaboration with the Armed Forces Medical Services (AFMS), the Government of Himachal Pradesh, and other research institutions of national importance, strengthening the vision of 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' through inclusive and climate-resilient healthcare.
During the foundation stone laying ceremony, a traditional land puja (bhumi pujan) will be performed, along with a plantation drive under the 'Green ICMR Campus Initiative.' The occasion will also feature a scientific exhibition, the launch of the center's website and institutional video, and the release of a special commemorative postal cover by the Union Health Minister.
The ceremony will be attended by several dignitaries, including Minister of State for Defence Shri Sanjay Seth, former Chief Minister Shri Jai Ram Thakur, MP Ms. Kangana Ranaut, MLA Ms. Anuradha Rana, and former member Shri Ravi Thakur. Senior officials and scientists from the Department of Health Research, including Air Marshal Sandeep Thareja, Director General of Armed Forces Medical Services, and Dr. Rajiv Bahl, Director General of ICMR, will also be present.
