The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will observe World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2026, aiming to make mental health care affordable and people-centric.

The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare will celebrate World Mental Health Day on October 10, 2026. On this occasion, the Government of India will reiterate its commitment to making mental health care accessible, affordable, inclusive, and people-centric. This year's global theme, "Lived Experience Heard: Real Voices, Real Change," emphasizes the importance of listening to individuals struggling with mental health issues and involving them in the creation of policies and services.
'Tele-MANAS' (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States) has emerged as a critical pillar in the expansion of mental health services in India. Launched on October 10, 2022, this service provides free, confidential, and 24/7 mental health counseling through the national toll-free helpline 14416. By October 2026, Tele-MANAS has received a total of 4,775,644 calls through 53 centers operating across all 36 states and union territories.
An analysis of the call profiles reveals that the participation of women among those seeking help is 43.78% (584,587), while men account for 54.18% (723,427). Additionally, individuals aged 18-45 make up 73.2% of the total caller profile. People are primarily using the helpline for emotional distress, stress, anxiety, sleep disturbances, and relationship-related issues.
On the occasion of World Mental Health Day 2026, the Ministry is also promoting the 'MANN Jaagriti' initiative. This community awareness initiative aims to strengthen mental health literacy and remove the associated social stigma through schools, colleges, and workplaces.
Alongside digital services, the government is strengthening infrastructure through the National Mental Health Programme (NMHP) and the District Mental Health Programme (DMHP). Approval has been granted to implement DMHP in 767 districts so far. Furthermore, mental health services have been integrated into more than 1.83 lakh Ayushman Arogya Mandirs across the country to ensure identification and treatment of problems at the primary level.
The Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has appealed to individuals and families facing mental health challenges to avail themselves of the free and confidential services available through the 14416 toll-free number.
